Yesterday I watched the new Hulu-original movie “Freah” starring Sebastian Stan, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jojo T. Gibbs, Andrea Bang and Dayo Okeniyi, just to name a few. It was directed by Mimi Cave. A screenplay by Lauryn Kahn. This movie is a comedy/thriller/horror. It was released on March 4th 2022. it has a runtime of 1h and 54 minutes. This is director Mimi’s first feature movie.
Onto the premise: The horrors of modern dating seen through one young woman’s defiant battle to survive her new boyfriend’s unusual appetites.
This movie is a sliced rather than a true slather movie.
Daisy Edgar-Jones plays Noa, a twenty something, whose frustrated with online dating but her experiences is a case study on the challenges of meeting the one on a dating app. After a couple of failed dates with a few guys, she finally meets this guy Steve while grocery shopping. He is a charming, good-looking and their first date showcases their chemistry with each other. We see him through Noa’s eyes throughout the entire movie. Just like her, we are searching for red flags, remaining on high alert for signs of something being off with him.
But plastic sergeant Steve’s warning signs are becoming noticeable way too late in my opinion….
After his true self is revealed…. and the opening credits start rolling, which is unique to me and I liked it.
Just after 40 minutes in into the movie… while the first act plays like a traditional rom-com, the shift jerks us and Noa in a different direction. Additional supporting act is done by Dayo Okeniyi as a bartender.
But it’s the impressive and shocking and at times uncomfortable performances of Stan and Edgar-Jones that allows the premise work so well and it had a couple of comedic scenes and lines which made me laugh so hard….
Act 3…. Without giving anything away….this movie is a mix of Promising Young Woman and Get Out!
In my opinion this movie was really worth a watch. I really liked certain camera angles and editing of certain scenes.
