Is “Happening” worth a watch?

Yesterday, IFC Films sent me a screener link to this 2021- Drama. It was featured at the “Sundance Film Festival last year. It starrs Anamaria Vatolomen , Kacey Mottel Klein, Louise Chevillotte, just to name a few. This movie was directed by Audrey Diwan. It is rated R and has a runtime of 1h 40 minutes. It will be released on May 6th 2022.

Onto the premise: This is the story of Anne, a young woman who decides to abort to finish her studies and escape the social constraints of a working-class family. France in 1963: a society that censures women’s desires. And sex in general. This simple but cruel story follows the itinerary of a woman who decides to go against the law. Anne has only a little time before her. Her exams are just around the corner, and her baby bump is growing fast.

As harrowing this movie is, it is so important that it was made because it reminds us of how hard won our victories around abortion.

This movie was definitely worth watching it despite its gore, which was definitely not for the fainted hearted.

I hadn’t seen Annamarie Vartoloment in a movie but I very impressed by her performance as our lead character in “Happening” . I will definitely watch more of her filmography after this one!

Did you know? This movie is an adaptation of the French author, Annie Ernaux’s eponymous novel, looking back on her experience with abortion when it was still illegal in France in the 1960s.
