Last year, I saw this trailer for “Family Squares” and was very excited and intrigued by it at the same time.
This movie is a comedy/Drama which was released on February 25th 2022. It starrs Max Caspe, Zoe Chao, Ann Dowd, Elsie Fisher and Margo Martindale just to name a few. It was directed and written by Stephanie Laing and Brad Morris.
On the premise: The Worth family has been divided for years but when the matriarch, Grandma Mabel dies suddenly, the family has to come together. The story of Family Squares takes the Worth family on a journey discovering that not only did Grandma Mabel keep some secrets, so did everyone else. They find their way back to each other and realize that while you can’t choose your family, you can choose to be friends with them.
It’s a cute and quirky COVID comedy built on Zoom calls, big secrets, sibling estrangement and amusingly “judgy” banter.
Anyone predisposed to like the off-center line-readings of Judy Greer, the curmudgeonly cracks of June Squibb, Earth Mama weariness of Margot Martindale, the blunt “honesty” of Anne Dowd and the late career realization Henry Winkler is still pretty damn funny.
In terms of production values, “Family Squares” falls somewhere between the slick, purpose-made studio-backed romances “(Locked Down”) starring Anne Hathaway. and the sea of more DIY affairs made by filmmakers hoping to be the first to initiate the “Lockdown” genre and use the limitations of a lockdown to his or her advantage.
This movie’s cast is so so good especially the grandchildren of Mabel. With every single player, many of them longtime audience favorites, delivering.
It’s funny to me that this movie was rated R and that for its language. However I do have to tell you what I did not like about it.
I didn’t like the intervention scenes like those were too slow for my taste and were used as fillers in this movie. I also wasn’t much of a fan of certain lines of certain characters.
However I overall think this movie is “worth a watch” if you are having a bad day at least. Especially you’ve ever dealt with family over the death of a relative, the sting of recognition alone is worth an extra giggle or two.
