A couple of days ago, Amazon Studios sent me a screener link for “All The Old Knives”. An Amazon prime Thriller starring Chris Pine, Thandiwe Newton (Netflix’s Big Mouth), Laurence Fishburne (Matrix), Jonathan Pryce (Imagine) and Corey Johnson (Morbius), just to name a few. It was directed by Janus Metz (P.O.V). It was written by Olen Steinhauer. It has a runtime of 1h and 41 minutes. It will be released on April 8th 2022. This movie is rated R for its language, violence, sexuality, nudity.
Onto the premise: Two CIA operatives, and former lovers, reunite at idyllic Carmel-by-the-Sea to re-examine a mission six years ago in Vienna where a fellow agent might have been compromised.
I was very excited about this movie because I love Chris pine and also Vienna is my hometown.
This movie is a spy movie and is based on a novel.
Former lovers and spies, Henry (Pine) and Cella (Newton) meet over dinner to think back at their time together in Vienna. Their conversation evolves into a hijacking of Royal Jordanian Flight 127, which in the deaths of all the passengers on the airplane. This experience haunts the CIA to this day. During this dinner, truths about these two former spies will be released…..
This movie was written in a non-linear narrative with flashbacks and where we, the audience get to see the sexual yet passionate relationship between Pine and Newton.
My one critic point about this movie is that if feel like a TV movie rather than a theatrical movie at times and also it stumbles over itself.
This very disappointing because the score by Jon Ekstrand is pretty good.
However, Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton deliver interesting and truly believable performances as Henry and Celia, their pairing easily the film’s most valuable asset. Pine, once again looking like Gary from Team America, has done the CIA thing before and effortlessly fits into the role while Newton approaches the role with the same tenderness mixed with a little tenacity to make their scenes together more engaging than the rest of the film.
I really liked certain camera angles and colorings in this movie.
Even tho it wasn’t the most thrilling spy thriller, despite my high hopes, I really liked it and can’t wait to see the world’s reaction to it!
Therefore it is “worth a watch” in my opinion.
Follow me for more reviews! I’ve planned a couple, which will be published in a couple days/hours! Stay tuned!
