Is “Under the Banner of Heaven” worth a watch?

When I found out that Andrew Garfield will be starring as a lead character in this very special Tv mini series, I was really looking forward to watching this but I forgot when it would be released so I just now started binge-watching it and am currently watching episode four as I’m writing this review for you. This mini-series was released on April 28th 2022. There have been seven episodes released but I’m currently watching episode four.

This show is a Crime/Drama/Thriller and consists of l seven episodes. It starrs Andres Garfield (Spider-Man: No Way Home), Sam Worthington ( “The Last Son”), Daisy Edgar Jones (2022’s HULU’s “Fresh”), Wyatt Russell (2021’s Netflix’s “The Window in the Window”, Billy Howle (2021’s Netflix’s “The Serpent”) and Chloe Pirrie (2020’s Netflix’s “The Queens Gambit”), just to name a few.

This show was directed by Courtney Hunt (“Fear The Walking Dead”. It was rated R for sex, violence and gore.

Onto the premise: A devout detective’s faith is tested as he investigates a brutal murder seemingly connected to an esteemed Utah family’s spiral into LDS fundamentalism and their distrust in the government.

In episode one, Detectives Jeb Pyre and Bill Taba investigate the brutal, sinister murders of an LDS woman, Brenda Wright Lafferty and her baby daughter in Utah’s typically serene Salt Lake Valley in 1984.

In episode two, With a lead suspect in custody, the investigation uncovers more ominous questions than answers as the hidden history of the once admired Lafferty family is exposed.

In episode three, The ongoing investigation leads Pyre and Taba into untrod woods where they unearth information that challenges Pyre’s own faith, and draw more Laffertys into suspicion and custody.

In episode four, The investigation intensifies after Pyre uncovers details of the Lafferty family’s fundamentalist beliefs, sparking a search for missing Lafferty brothers, Ron and Dan and putting Pyre at odds with his own church leaders.

In episode five, With evidence now pointing squarely toward fundamentalist Mormonism, Pyre turns to LDS Church leaders for guidance but is met with roadblocks. Undeterred, he discovers a list of names Brenda’s killers plan to murder next.

In episode six, New details emerge about Brenda’s attempt to reckon with some of the Lafferty family’s most extreme members and beliefs, as Pyre and Taba hunt for those who killed Brenda before they can kill again.

In the season finale, episode seven, As the details of the murders become clear, Pyre and Taba embark on an interstate manhunt, hoping to catch the killers before they complete their list of those to be “blood atoned.”

Did you know?

The series is based on the real-life 1984 murder of Brenda Lafferty.

The red book Allen Lafferty directs Pyre to in episode 6 is “Mormonism: Shadow or Reality?” by Jerald & Sandra Tanner. (Originally published in 1963.)

The town of Rockwell is fictional, and the real Lafferty case occurred in the town of American Fork, Utah.

The disused Didsbury (Alberta) fire hall doubled as East Rockwell police station.

This is the second religious/cult themed project Rory Culkin has been in, the first being Waco.

I love Andrew Garfield, he is such an amazing actor! He did such an amazing job and a believable one. He said in an recent interview that he liked the challenge la this role had brought him and it’s difficulty as well. He added by saying that he was really looking forward to the viewer’s reaction to his role in this religious mini-series.

Daisy-Edgar Jones was another strong performer among the cast, trying to combine her faith and ambition in a world that has stood still but now is trying to propel backwards.

The plot is slow but answers all questions, which may be occurring. Never seen anything like this before in my life and I’m so glad that I watched it! Every episode gets better and better than the one before! I honestly hope that it will be picked up for a second season. It kept me invested with Andrew’s amazing acting and Sam’s sometimes disturbing acting. But I wouldn’t except anything different from him after his performance in last year’s Western “The Last Son”. Along with the mystery surrounding Daisy’s character.

I really liked the tense atmosphere that was created by the show runners throughout this season. I loved the cinematography, like Calgary is beautiful along with Utah. Just breathtakingly beautiful!!

Therefore it’s “Worth a watch” and Ceren approved! Also the health issue that Andrew’s mother is dealing with hit close to home to me and this made this series even more difficult for me to watch.
