Yesterday, I watched Pixar’s newest movie “Lightyear”, the prequel movie to the “Toy Story” franchise. This is the movie which Andy saw and wanted the Buzz Lightyear action figure afterwards, which we got introduced to in 1995’s “Toy Story”.
This movie starrs Chris Evans, Keke Palmer, Peter Sohn, Taika Waititi, Bill Hader and Efren Ramirez, just to name a few.
This movie has a runtime of 1h and 40 minutes. This movie was released on June 17th 2022. This movie is an animated Action/Adventure movie. This movie was rated PG-13.
Onto the premise; While spending years attempting to return home, marooned Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear encounters an army of ruthless robots commanded by Zurg who are attempting to steal his fuel source.
One thing I really liked was that the figures were looking so much alike the voice cast. Along with that I really liked the animation style of this movie, it made me feel very nostalgic, being a 90s kid myself and having seen all the “Toy Story” movies.
The good points about the movie are that the art and animation is excellent.
Visually, it’s incredible, the level of detail captured and the styling of the shots on occasion had me in true awe and wonderment.
It may be Pixar’s most straightforward film so far but that doesn’t stop Lightyear from being another gorgeously animated installment and a great sci-fi adventure that’s thrilling, funny and emotional, with the odd twist and heartfelt message up its sleeve as well.
For many years “UP” was my favorite Pixar production . But now “Lightyear” has taken that spot. This was such a surprising and delightful experience for me. From the story to animation.. everything was nicely done. Pixar keep getting better.
It made me laugh, there’s a specific part (I won’t spoil) that made me cry. You get to see multiple characters learn and grow over the course of the film, which is a pretty rewarding experience (in my opinion). It’s just a genuinely well told story. Plus it’s got a lot of great morels/lessons for the kid watching. Can’t understand where the hate is coming from beyond one female character having a female partner (but like it’s not a romantic flick/ its Space and Sci-fi laser fights). If I saw this when I was a kid you bet your butt me and my little bro would be playing Space Ranger/ begging my mom let us go as Buzz Lightyear for Halloween.
I loved the references to the franchise such as a certain scene towards the end, hint: blue and White.
Did you know?: The oxygen tanks in the movie are actually scream canisters used in “Monsters Inc”to save the scares and laughs.
The ship’s internal voice activated navigator (IVAN), the equivalent of a GPS, acts like a real-world, misbehaving GPS. It’s voiced by Mary McDonald-Lewis who’s also the voice of OnStar’s navigation system.
Bill Hader is the only actor to appear in a Toy Story film as well as Lightyear. As he played Axel the Carnie in Toy Story 4 (2019) and in Lightyear he plays the rookie, Featheringhamstan.
The names for most of the characters share names with Portland, Oregon bridges: Hawthorne, Burnside, Morrison, Steel, and Sellwood are all names of well-known bridges.
Buzz Lightyear and Zurg are the only two characters to appear from the “Toy Story” films.
At the film’s premiere, Chris Evans (jokingly) apologized to James Brolin for beating up his son Josh Brolin in Avengers: Endgame (2019).
This film is rated PG by the MPAA, unlike all four main Toy Story films in the franchise, which were rated G. However, due to the brief same sex kiss, it became the first children’s animated film to be given an NC16 rating in Singapore, equivalent to a R rating in the US.
I overall liked this movie, therefore it was “worth a watch”!
