Is Hulu’s “Not Okay” worth a watch?

Earlier today, I watched Hulu’s “Not Okay” Comedy/Drama starring Dylan O’Brian, Zoey Deutch, Tia Dionne Hodge (2020’s Netflix’s “FBI: Most Wanted”), Embeth Davidtz (“Gray’s Anatomy), Brennan Brown (“Chicago Med”), just to name a few. This movie has a runtime of 1h and 40 minutes. It was rightfully rated R for language and triggers for people. This movie was released on July 29th 2022 on Hulu. This movie was directed and written by Quinn Shepherd (“Midnight Sun”).

Onto the premise: Danni Sanders (Zoey Deutch), an aimless aspiring writer with no friends, no romantic prospects and – worst of all – no followers, fakes an Instagram-friendly trip to Paris in the hopes of boosting her social media clout. When a terrifying incident strikes the City of Lights, Danni unwittingly falls into a lie bigger than she ever imagined. She “returns” a hero, even striking up an unlikely friendship with Rowan (Mia Isaac), a real trauma survivor dedicated to societal change, and scooping up the man of her dreams Colin (Dylan O’Brien). As an influencer and advocate, Danni finally has the life and audience she always wanted. But it’s only a matter of time before the façade cracks, and she learns the hard way that the Internet loves a takedown.

Honestly, this movie was a roller coaster ride of emotions for me. There were parts where I laughed at most of the jokes, there also were parts , especially towards the end, where I couldn’t stop crying.

I don’t know if you know this but I had an opportunity to be in a zoom meeting with Dylan for his movie “The Outfit” a couple months ago and he had told me that he had another movie coming later this year back then , so when I saw the Trailer for this one, I was really looking forward to watching this one because he has blonde hair now and I was curious about the what kind of a movie this would be and now that I’ve finished it twice, I’m glad that I’had seen it. It makes you think and question your behavior on social media and overall.

This film captures a lot of what is currently plaguing the world. It mentions deep topics of privilege and politics. The film captured my attention throughout the entire film. And the poem at the end of the film gave me literal chills! I hope that the positive messages of this movie are able to continue the message that there needs to be more immediate change in this country. Every day I see more and more news stories about gun violence and to see this film personalize some of the stories and illustrate what a child that survives a school shooting may have to go through is groundbreaking and needs to be addressed further.

This movie was declared as a Drama but I think it should’ve been declared as a Thriller because of its content and the disclaimer in regards to what you will be seeing in it were so on point, I can’t stop thinking about this movie and especially how I would’ve reacted to certain things in this movie.

Just watching the trailer alone, something insta-snapped deep within and viola, that urge compelled a necessary first. Yup. The trailer itself was that crazy unexpectedly compact great that it’s a slam dunk for the entire movie to possibly be anti-Titanic insured for that target audience. My first crazy ever movie review based on just trailer alone! king being horribly wrong but hey, screw it. The world’s upside down now with too many crazy nonsense, let’s just live wild just a little, go with the flow and just do it! Someone give those responsible for this trailer magic, some beer, with baguette, but of course. Full movie in the bag next.

This movie has a Freah, on point, unique touch with an important message all wrapped in under two hours. I knew that this movie would be something different from what I’ve ever seen but I wasn’t expecting that! I’m still in awe of what I’ve seen and I really liked the references to pop culture and to the end of 90s and 2000s with certain songs. I had a lot of fun with this flick, which is ironic because given the premise.

I actually really loved this movie. I saw the trailer and was extremely excited for something new and fresh, and that’s exactly what this was. It feels significant in a way I cant quite describe, but its got to be one of the most accurate and not-cringey depictions of current society I’ve seen in a while.

The anti-heroine is the perfect combination of horrible but bearable, enough so that she’s still a joy to watch, and Zoey’s acting skills certainly shine.

As for the acting, I just love Zoey and Dylan man. Both are really talented actors. I loved them in “The Outfit” earlier this year.

Overall I would highly recommend this movie, therefore Hulu’s “Not Okay” was “worth a watch” but with a huge Trigger Warning! Another thing that I really liked were the relatability of mental health problems and the overall message of this movie.

Did you know? Zoey Deutch & Dylan O’Brien previously collaborated in the Crime/Drama/Action 2022’s “The Outfit”.

I will be posting many reviews within the upcoming weeks so I am sorry that I will be spamming you guys with blog posts!
