Is Netflix’s “Day Shift” worth a watch?

Earlier today I watched Netflix’s newest movie “Day Shift” starring Jamie Fox, Dave Franco, Musician Snoop Dogg and many more! It was directed by J.J. Perry (“John Wick: Chapter 2).

This movie is an Action/Comedy/Fantasy/Thriller. It was released on August 12th 2022. It is rated R and has a runtime of 1h and 53 minutes.

Onto the premise: A hard-working, blue-collar dad who just wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted 8-year-old daughter. His mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income: hunting and killing vampires.

It must now have been long enough that the 90s action films are considered “classics” as this a ripping good time that could have been released in 1996 alongside From Dusk Till Dawn…

I wish more studios, like this film, were not afraid to give a good new action flick an R18+ Rating so the action can be turned up to 11… It wastes no time setting up the premise and utilises CGI to enhance the creature effects well.

It’s not perfect… But you get… Crazy characters, a good guy trying to make ends meet, comedy… Just some ‘ol B-grade good fun.

Snoop is fun, there are a few great fight sequences, and I even chuckled a couple of times. This is also something we have seem a million times which mostly is a bad thing, but it also means that you know what you are getting. Watching this movie is like eating at McDonalds.

Dave Franco is always great and thee is some great back and forth between him and Jamie Foxx.

Overall I really liked it. It was so much fun with some jump scares here and there! Therefore it was “worth a watch” for a fun popcorn movie.

Follow me for more reviews and tomorrow will be a new episode of my podcast out.

Did you know? The action scenes were made by those who made the action scenes for “Bullet Train” and “John Wick”.

When Bud (Jamie Foxx) and Big John (Snoop Dog) enter the Hunters Union, there is a portrait of Abraham Lincoln and two axes on the wall, a nod to the Timur Bekmambetov film Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Multiple references to The Lost Boys (1987) including the amusement park at the beginning, the movie theater marquee at 1h25m, and the last line of the movie.

This movie is J.J. Perry’s directorial debut.

When Big John (Snoop Dogg) scans his thumb at the elevator, the machine displays his union rank and full name on screen; “Venator 1st Class: Eliott, John Dante”. Venator in Latin means “hunter”.
