Is Disney Plus’ “Candy” worth a watch?

This series was another highly anticipated one for me.

This Disney Plus series starrs Jessica Biel, Melanie Lynskey (“Young Sheldon”), Pablo Schreiber (“Tbe King’s Daughter”), Timothy Simons (“Don’t Worry Darling”), just to name a few.

This movie was directed by Michael Uppendahl (“American Crime Story”).

This series has five episodes in its first season. This series was released on May 9th 2022 in the US and on November 9th 2022 in Germany.

This series was rated R for violence and gore, frightening imagery and intense scenes.

This series is a Biography/Crime/Drama/Mystery/Thriller.

Onto the premise: Candy Montgomery is a 1980s housewife and mother who did everything right – but when the pressure of conformity builds within her, her actions scream for just a bit of freedom. Until someone tells her to shush. With deadly results.

In episode one, A normal day in the life of Texas housewife Candy Montgomery is interrupted by a beguiling incident. Meanwhile, Allan Gore, away on business, tries to contact his eerily absent wife Betty.

In Episode two, Two years before the incident, Candy and Betty are shocked when their beloved pastor Jackie announces her divorce. Candy considers her own love life, while Betty takes on a troubled foster child.

In episode three, Candy and Allan’s affair begins. Betty is pregnant and finds a surprising source of support in Candy. Betty and Allan become closer while attending Marriage Encounter.

In episode four,The day after the incident, Candy takes part in the ongoing investigation into the murder of Betty Gore. As more evidence comes to light, Candy hires ambulance-chaser attorney Don Crowder.

In episode five, The “Trial of the Century” begins in Collin County Courthouse. Aided by Don’s bombastic style, Candy fights to tell her story. The jury of her peers deliberates on Candy’s fate.

This, mini series is different than the others of this year, because this one is a strong setup, introducing the key characters and quietly building Hitchcockian suspense towards the revelation of this murder.

The cast is strong and Jessica Biel is fabulous, leading the line as the eponymous character. Candy is superficially a suburban supermom, but also a passive-aggressive charred-martyr who courts adulation.

After one outing, Candy is entertaining and enjoyable, raising anticipation for the second instalment. The consecutive-day episode-delivery compromise is good, minimising the wait without the daunting one-day dump.

If you are in the mood for a good true crime story, I’d readily suggest you check this out, and draw your own conclusion.

Jessica Bill seems to have found her niche in playing “off-balanced” characters. She did a great job and even better in Candy.

The rest of the cast were also a little off but the director was very good at not turning this into a comedy. The ending was a bit of a shocker.

Did you know? Both Jessica Biel and Melanie Lynskey’s husbands have roles in the series. Justin Timberlake and Jason Ritter play Police Officers.

Overall I really enjoyed it even if it reminded me of “Dahmer”.

Jessica Biel shines and stands out as the lead character.
