Is Netflix’s “Slumberland” worth a watch?

I talked about this movie in my recap of Netflix’s “Tuddum” event back in September.

This Netflix movie starrs Jason Momoa, Marlow Barkley (Apple tv Plus’ “Spirited”), Chris O’Dowd (“Big Mouth”), just to name a few.

This movie was directed by thee Francis Lawrence.

This movie was released on November 18th 2022 on Netflix. It was rated PG-13 for language, suggestive references, action, peril and thematic elements.

This Netflix movie is a Comedy/Adventure/Family/Musical/Fantasy/Action.

Onto the premise:Slumberland takes audiences to a magical new place, a dreamworld where precocious Nemo (Marlow Barkley) and her eccentric companion Flip (Jason Momoa) embark on the adventure of a lifetime. After her father Peter (Kyle Chandler) is unexpectedly lost at sea, young Nemo’s idyllic Pacific Northwest existence is completely upended when she is sent to live in the city with her well-meaning but deeply awkward uncle Phillip (Chris O’Dowd). Her new school and new routine are challenging by day but at night, a secret map to the fantastical world of Slumberland connects Nemo to Flip, a rough-around-the-edges but lovable outlaw who quickly becomes her partner and guide. She and Flip soon find themselves on an incredible journey traversing dreams and fleeing nightmares, where Nemo begins to hope that she will be reunited with her father once again. According to Netflix’s description.

I loved this film. It was visually beautiful, the casting was great and the story had enough of an emotional depth to make it something special rather than just another fantasy film.

Marlow Barkley was wonderful as Nemo. I think she’s going to be a big star. And Jason Momoa was a revelation as Flip. It was so good to see him playing silly, fun and heart-warming. A real change from his tougher roles. I loved them both and they made me cry. All the supporting cast were good too. Ten out of ten for all involved.

I’d recommend this film to fans of good story telling and fantasy. A real timeless classic.

Not everything has to be mind blowing intelligent. This is a story that reminds you of being a child but has echoes of escape as an adult. Jason and the girl were excellent and there were quite a few chuckles along the way.

I will be recommending this to friends with children as it is definitely a family movie.

We all need escapism from time to time and this a feel good movie that takes you on a journey.
