Is “Empire Of Light” worth a watch?

I heard only good things about this movie.

This movie starrs Olivia Colman (“Joyride”), Toby Jones (“About Fate”), just to name a few.

This movie was directed by Sam Mendes (“1917”). This movie was released on December 9th 2022. It was rated R for sexual content, language, violence, profanity and frightening imagery.

This movie is a Drama and Romance.

This movie debuted at “TIFF”, “London Film Festival”, “Newport beach international film festival”, just to name a few.

Onto the premise: A drama about the power of human connection during turbulent times, set in an English coastal town in the early 1980s.

Hilary, who opens the theater doors in the morning, does not care for such nonsense. To her, with a troubled past and anger issues, it is just a job and routine. Hilary goes about her business, does sexual favors for the boss in his office, and eats dinner alone at home. Things change when a young black man, Stephen, is hired at the Empire. Hilary takes Stephen under her wing and shows him interesting things about the theater and its employees. When they encounter a hurt bird, Stephen impresses Hillary with his kindness in helping the bird to fly again. Hilary and Stephen open their hearts to each other. However, it isn’t long before Hilary’s darker issues surface once more.

No one is going to give you the life you want, you must go out and get it.

This tender, inspiring, and compassionate movie takes us to Great Britain in the 1980s.

From start to finish, “Empire of Light” is an experience of a movie.

Set in the early 1980’s in a beautiful, vintage cinema in a quaint English seaside town, the movie explores the complexities of the lives of those who work at the movie theater.

While it’s certainly an ensemble movie with Olivia Colman’s brilliant performance coupled with Toby Jones’s performance.

Their performances are masterful individually, yet equally powerful as a poetic duet of two seemingly different people impacted by the collision of lives.

At it’s core, “Empire of Light” is a fascinating and sometime brutal tale about the fragility of human emotions. It also leaves you with questions such as: What is the breaking point of a character? What is their moment of redemption? Their darkest place? Their point of no return?

All of this is achingly underscored by a stunning score.

Olivia Colman’s portrayal will take your breath away.
